General Contractor in Grey County

From our base in Markdale we build custom homes, garages, shops, farm buildings and additions right across Grey County.

Grey County

One county, a lot of ground to cover

Grey County stretches from the shores of Georgian Bay down to the farmland of Southgate and West Grey. It is a big place, and it is home. CKThompson Contracting is based in Markdale, near the middle of the county, so most of it is within an easy drive.

In the CommunityVotes Grey County awards, local voters named us the Platinum winner for General Contractors in both 2024 and 2025. We are proud of that, and grateful to everyone who voted.

We build the full range: custom homes, garages and shops, agricultural buildings, additions, decks, roofing and interior finishing. On larger jobs we also manage the whole project, including permits, trades and the schedule.

That range means one contractor can see a project through from the first conversation to the final walk through, wherever in the county it happens to be.

Below are the towns and areas we work in most. Each one has its own page with local details.

What changes from town to town

Grey County is not one set of rules. These are the things that change depending on where you build.

Knowing which rules apply to your property before the design is finished saves time and money. We check them at the start of every job.

  • Nine building departments. Grey County has nine local municipalities, and each one issues its own building permits.
  • Snow and wind loads. The Ontario Building Code sets design snow and wind loads by location, and they vary across the county.
  • County road entrances. A new driveway onto a county road needs an entrance permit from Grey County.
  • Conservation authorities. Lots near rivers, wetlands or shorelines can need a conservation authority permit before building.
  • Niagara Escarpment. Land in the Niagara Escarpment Plan area can need a development permit from the Niagara Escarpment Commission.
  • Rural services. Outside the towns, most homes need their own well and septic system.
  • Zoning. Each municipality has its own zoning bylaw, which sets how far buildings must sit from lot lines and how much of the lot they can cover.
