General Contractor in Blue Mountains
Second homes, chalets, additions and decks across the Town of The Blue Mountains, built by a Grey County crew that keeps you updated while you are away.
Between the bay and the ski hills
CKThompson Contracting is a general contractor in Blue Mountains for owners who want a solid house near the water or the hills. The Town of The Blue Mountains runs along the south shore of Georgian Bay, from Craigleith and the Blue Mountain resort area west through Thornbury and Clarksburg toward Meaford.
A lot of the homes here are second homes. Owners drive up from Toronto or further away for weekends, ski season and the summer. Many of them want a contractor they can trust to run the job while they are not on site, and that is a big part of how we work here.
We build new homes, additions, decks, garages and roofs, and we finish interiors. Our shop is in Markdale, under an hour south, so the crew can be on your site on a regular schedule through the whole build.
Weather off the bay, the escarpment above town and the town's own planning rules all shape a build here. We plan for them from the first visit so the price and the schedule hold.
How we run a job when you live somewhere else
Most of our Blue Mountains clients are not here every day. This is how we keep the project on track and keep you informed between visits.
- 01
Walk the lot
We meet you on site once, or walk it on a video call, and look at access, slope, trees and where the services can go.
- 02
Price it in writing
You get a written quote that lists what is included, so there is nothing to guess at from a distance.
- 03
Handle the approvals
We work with the Town of The Blue Mountains building department and any other agency the lot needs, such as the conservation authority or the Niagara Escarpment Commission.
- 04
Send updates
Photos and short updates come to you as each stage is finished: foundation, framing, roof, close in and finish.
- 05
Hand over the keys
We walk the finished house with you and show you the systems, so it is ready for the first weekend you use it.
What the bay and the hills mean for a build
Thornbury and Craigleith look gentle in July. The same lots see strong wind, lake effect snow and wet ground for months of the year.
These are the points we check before the design is final.
Lake effect snow
Cold air crossing Georgian Bay drops heavy snow on the shore towns. Roofs, trusses and entrances are planned around it.
Wind off the water
Lots facing the bay take wind straight off the water. Fastening, bracing and window choices allow for it.
Shoreline and creek lots
Lots near the bay, the Beaver River or the creeks that run down the escarpment can need a conservation authority permit before building.
Escarpment land
Lots on the slopes above the shore can fall inside the Niagara Escarpment Plan area, which adds a development permit step.
Clay and wet ground
Parts of the shoreline plain stay wet into late spring. Footing drains and grading keep water away from the foundation.
Seasonal use
A house that sits empty for weeks needs plumbing, heat and insulation that handle a cold snap with no one home.
From our own job sites: a finished open interior, wall framing under new trusses, and a built in mudroom bench.
What we build in The Blue Mountains
Each service has its own page. Start with the one closest to your plans.
Second homes here often combine several of these, such as a new home with a big deck and a mudroom for ski gear.

Custom Homes
Year round and weekend homes on lots near the bay, the town or the hills.

Framing & Additions
Bunk rooms, bigger kitchens and sunrooms added to an existing cottage or chalet.

Decks & Porches
Decks and covered porches that face the water or the slopes.

Interior Finishing
Mudrooms with room for boots and skis, plus trim, stairs and built ins.

Steel & Shingle Roofing
Roofs that stand up to lake effect snow and wind off the bay.

Project Management
One point of contact who runs the job while you are away.

Blue Mountains questions
Can you build my house while I live in the city?
Yes. Many of our clients here live elsewhere. We run the job, handle the approvals and send photo updates at each stage, and you visit when it suits you.
Who issues building permits in Thornbury and Craigleith?
The Town of The Blue Mountains building department. On jobs we manage, we prepare and submit the application.
My lot is near the bay. Do I need another permit?
Possibly. Lots near the shoreline or a creek can be regulated by the local conservation authority. We check the lot early so the approval does not hold up the start.
Can you add a bunk room or addition to my chalet?
Yes. We check the existing foundation and framing, then build the addition so it ties in with the original structure and roof line.
How far is The Blue Mountains from you?
Our shop is in Markdale, under an hour south of Thornbury and Craigleith depending on where your lot is.
What does a new home in The Blue Mountains cost?
Every build is priced on its own. Size, the lot, the foundation, the finishes and the approvals all change the number. We walk the site and give you a written quote with no obligation.
